Chronicle Books

Asa Senior Designer I art directed and designed over 100 titles. The Art of Pixar, What's your Poo Telling You?, The History of Surfing, and The Country Cooking of Ireland. I designed all of those, and so many things in between. Pop culture, food, and design were my categories of choice. You’ve likely seen some of these titles in a local gift shop. Maybe you have purchased one for a friend. Maybe you even have one on your shelf at home?
Every Pixar film has what is called a colorscript, that dictates the tone and feel and the movie. Often hand drawn, these artworks are collected in this book, chronicling the artistry of many of Pixar's most beloved movies like Wall•E, Cars, The Incredibles, Monster's Inc., and more.

Colman Andrews’ massive tome to Irish cooking. Winner of the James Beard award for best International cookbook, and overall cookbook of the year, 2009. The challenge of this design was to honor Irish heritage without falling into the common visual clichés like shamrocks and leprechauns.

In the 1950s Allen Ginsberg asked Jack Kerouac to formally describe his “spontaneous prose” method, and in response he penned a list of maxims called “Belief and Technique for Modern Prose.” The book is a collection of these maxims. Using archival photos, varying typographic tones, and notebook ephemera, a spontaneous graphic language develops.
Lisa Anderson is a 4-time surfing world champion, and pioneer of the sport for women. This is a biography and a surfing photography book in one, and I wanted the design to feel eclectic, off-kilter and scrapbook-y.
A sampling of other books and book covers I designed while at Chronicle Books:
